The department's research mission is addressed through initiatives that focus on the following topics:
- Description of processes of sensation, perception, cognition, and motor control underlying communication functions
- Examination of changes through life-span development, deterioration, regeneration, and experience that impact normal and disordered human communication
- Development of assessments of and treatments for disorders of human communication
- Investigation of social, familial, and cultural issues impacting normal and disordered communication
- Exploration of the molecular and epidemiological bases of normal and disordered human communication
