Training Program for Northwestern Students

The Learning Clinics offer services to diverse populations across the life span, diagnosing and teaching individuals with learning problems from early childhood through adulthood. On site Diagnostic Clinic Experience, Diagnostic Teaching Experience, and Remediation Clinics provide professional preparation for our undergraduate and graduate students and foster ongoing research in the field. Theory that is learned in the classroom is put into practice through observation and participation in the clinical programs. Student clinicians are closely supervised by clinical faculty, ensuring a well-supported learning environment for students and clients, while promoting the growth of mentoring relationships between students and faculty.

Diagnostic Clinic Experience

The diagnostic team consists of a clinical faculty member and two to three graduate students. All team members participate in the assessment and collaborate on the interpretation of data for a new client each week. Graduate students gain experience administering formal and informal psychoeducational measures, conducting parent interviews, and participating in final conferences with parents and children. Students are mentored throughout the diagnostic process, as the team members become increasingly independent.

Diagnostic Teaching Experience

Using information from the diagnostic report, graduate students develop intervention strategies for remediating individual clients. Each student is directly supervised by Dr. Doris J. Johnson, Jo Ann and Peter Dolle Professor of Learning Disabilities.

Remediation Clinic Experience

As part of the remediation experience, each undergraduate and graduate student works one-on-one with children who have a variety of learning difficulties, including reading, writing, and math disabilities. Weekly meetings with clinical faculty provide time for reflection and collaboration regarding goals and lesson plans. Students are closely coached and supervised throughout remediation, ensuring a positive experience for both students and clients.
