About the Department

Frances Searle Building![]()
In 1972, the department moved into a magnificent new facility, the Frances Searle building, located on the shores of Lake Michigan with classroom, clinic, and research facilities under one roof for all the departments' programs in audiology and hearing sciences, learning disabilities, and speech language pathology.
Today, CSD offers:
Audiology and Hearing Sciences
Human Communication Sciences (functions as a premed major)
Learning Disabilities
Speech Language Pathology
Northwestern's pioneer CSD faculty were clinicians as well as researchers. The department's clinical service and education missions continue in clinics housed in the Frances Searle building and in hospital-based clinics in downtown Chicago. A full range of diagnostic and treatment services are offered for patients of all ages with hearing, speech, learning, language, voice, and swallowing disorders. We invite you to learn more about the programs, courses, faculty, research laboratories, and clinics that make up Northwestern's Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.
