Interaction and Social Influence Program
This area of study employs empirical research methods to analyze communication among individuals. Students choosing this area will be expected to develop substantial expertise in empirical methods and statistical analysis. Within this area, teaching and research in the department includes:
- Interaction processes-analysis of the fundamental verbal and nonverbal processes of face-to-face communication.
- Influence processes-analysis of persuasion, conflict management and bargaining and negotiation.
- Relational processes-analysis of interaction within the family and in other intimate contexts.
- Small group communication-analysis of leadership, decision-making in small groups as well as the study of self-help and community action groups.
- Health communication-analysis of interaction processes that influence a person's psychological and physical well-being including those encounters that occur in the health care system, the workplace, and the family.
