The Northwestern Debate Society, directed by Communication Studies faculty member, and "Coach of the Decade, 1990-99" award winner, Scott Deatherage, provides all Northwestern students the opportunity to participate in intercollegiate debate. The oldest active debate team in the country, Northwestern has maintained its tradition of excellence by winning numerous National Debate Tournament Championships (NDT). In all, NU has won the NDT twelve times, almost double the championships of the second place competitors. Northwestern students have also won nine NDT Top Speaker awards, more than students from any other school. Opportunities for competition are available at all levels, from novice to national championship contenders. There are no tryouts; participation is open to any interested Communication Studies undergraduate. For more information, stop by the Debate Office, Hardy House, 1809 Chicago Ave., or contact Scott Deatherage, Director of Forensics at lsd041@northwestern.edu.
